Hoyt Arboretum Children Adventures Map

Introducing the Hoyt Arboretum Children’s Adventures Map, designed for Hoyt Arboretum in Portland, Oregon, as their public use, family-focused map. This map is available in the kiosk outside of the Hoyt Arboretum Visitor Center.

The double-sided map features seven different family friendly routes within the larger network of trails. Because Hoyt Arboretum’s trail system is complex, one of the chief goals for this project was to provide visual clarity while encouraging a fun, engaging experience for children and their families.

The map also features over two dozen miniature illustrations for several of the Arboretum’s best known trees, each drawn where they’d be found on the trail routes, as well as tree, leaf, and magnolia flower identification activities for kids.

The research process for this project therefore involved extensive onsite research and scouting work. The trees illustrations developed from onsite sketches.

Some key features that we developed for this map include:

  • A combination of colors and shapes used to easily distinguish the different routes and regions of the park.

  • A bright and cheery color scheme, using mostly black and white graphics with accents of color. The colors we chose were evocative of the tree routes featured on the map.

  • Hands-on activities to support and encourage different kinds of learning and engagement throughout all four seasons.

This project was made for Hoyt Arboretum, located in Portland, Oregon. Learn more about Hoyt Arboretum here.

The map is available to the public for free and can be found at the visitor center or online at the Hoyt Arboretum “Families & Kids” webpage (see the “Evergreen” side at this Arboretum link; see “Flowering Trees” side here).
