U.S. Fish and Wildlife: Explore Your Refuge Trail Map Series
We are thrilled to introduce the completion of a major educational project for U.S. Fish & Wildlife focusing on the four urban National Wildlife Refuges in the Portland, Oregon, metro region. This project involved the completion of four family centered trail maps, each featuring major restoration work; fish, birds, and wildlife information; trail suggestions; and hands on learning material.
The four sites featured in the “Explore Your Refuge” series are:
Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Washougal, Washington - featuring a major habitat restoration and trail redesign, new wetland spaces, viewing for salmon, birding, and lamprey, and other interpretive elements.
Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge in Ridgefield, Washington - featuring two different units of the vast refuge, including an auto tour; interpretive activities related to waterfowl, white oaks, and sensory activies; and the park’s Chinook Plankhouse
Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge in Tualatin, Oregon - featuring a visitor center, sites for white oak and animal viewing, and views of the Tualatin River
Wapato Lake National Wildlife National Refuge in Gaston, Oregon - one of the region’s newest wildlife refuges, with a seasonal lake, osprey viewing, and many migratory waterfowl in the winter months
Our work on this project included all of the content, copywriting, research, and design work for the materials; and was done with the partnership, support, and group walks with park staff, volunteers, and community partners.
The maps are free and available at the refuge sites.
