Five Reasons Fall is a Great Time for an Outdoor Family Adventure
Written by: Bryna Campbell
Have you been thinking about getting outside for a family adventure? Here are five reasons fall is a great time for family nature exploring in the Pacific Northwest!
Rain brings new life to the outdoors!
Sometimes we all get a little cranky when the rain returns in the Pacific Northwest. But remember, when the rain returns, so does so much else! Moss returns, fungi grow, and creatures awaiting cooler days come out again. This is a great time of the year to explore new growth in the forests.
The outdoors looks a little different every time you go out.
It's not just that fall brings new colors to the forest...every week, these colors change. In no other season does the passage of time seem so palpable. In our monthly subscriptions for kids this time of year, we like to provide tools for exploring these continual changes. But obviously, you don't need a packet to watch change in action. Why not use a neighborhood or backyard tree as your barometer, checking on it's changes every week?
It's Spider Season!
Many outdoor spiders live on a seasonal cycle that begins in the spring and matures in the fall. Until late summer, they tend to stay in hiding because they are still small and quite vulnerable. Now is when you'll find them at their biggest and showiest before a new generation of spiders begins the process again.
All that Fog, Drizzle, and Moss is creepy in a fun way!
For many kids, there's no better time for creative outdoor play than in the fall because it so easily sparks the imagination. Add to this fact that fall is also the season for Halloween and you have a perfect match! It's no secret that we're all about this kind of creative play.
No matter what the season, outdoor play helps develop "nature intelligence"
With so many natural disasters happening recently (from fires on the West Coast to Hurricane Maria currently affecting Puerto Rico and other areas of the Caribbean) it's absolutely vital that kids develop a sense of respect and humility towards the natural world. Outdoor time has been proven to help build what experts call "nature intelligence," or nature awareness. And when kids are outdoors regularly, it can help them become attuned to nature's larger cycles.
Still Need Some Convincing?
At Super Nature Adventures we make packets for kids with waterproof materials that make it easy to get outdoors in any weather. In the fall, we focus on special packets that celebrate the wonders of the season that make it unique. Interested in Fall Leaves? Us too! It plays a major role in our monthly subscription packets. Want to explore fall moss and fungi? All fall and winter, we’ll be exploring this in our packets, online facebook community and more.
Don't let the rainy season keep your family from experiencing nature in one of its most wondrous seasons!
